Ed Straker is the Commander-in-Chief of SHADO operations, appointed to the post in 1970/71 by a special committee of the United Nations Security Council at the time of their approval of the formation of Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization.

At that time, Straker was a full colonel in the United States air force. He was a command pilot with missile operations experience, a degree in astrophysics and had spent two years at MIT on lunar research.
